Phakic Lens Implants

STAAR Visian ICL is FDA approved for placement in the posterior chamber of the phakic eye in patients 21-45 years of age that meet the criteria listed below.

  • Correction or reduction of myopia -3.0D to -20.0D with less than or equal to 2.5D cylinder in the spectacle plane
  • Anterior Chamber Depth (ACD) 3.0mm or greater
  • Stable refractive history within 0.5 Diopter for 1 year prior to implantation
  • Meet endothelial cell density requirements

Ideal Visian ICL candidates

  • All myopes starting as low as -3.0D through to -20.0D
  • All patients being considered for PRK
  • Eyes with larger pupils
  • Eyes with thinner corneas
  • Patients with dry eye
  • Irregular or suspicious corneas

Patients NOT suitable for the Visian ICL

  • Patients with pre-existing eye diseases such as glaucoma, iritis, diabetic retinopathy, synechiae, pigment dispersion, pseudoexfoliation
  • Eyes with shallow chambers and/or narrow angles
  • Patients with auto immune disorders
  • Patients who are pregnant or nursing

Can Steven Holcomb and 'Night Train' reach victory lane?

The USA has not won Olympic gold in men's bobsled since 1948. If the four-man crew piloted by Steven Holcomb ends the drought at the Vancouver Games, it should make room on the podium for a fifth team member.

Named "The Night Train," the sled that has carried Team Holcomb to a historic world title and high hopes for the 2010 Olympics already is well known on the bobsled circuit. Competitors eyeball it at the finish line and take pictures, looking for secrets to the speed beneath its unusual, flat-black finish. "It's getting a lot of notoriety as we lead up to the Games, and it's well deserved," U.S. men's bobsled coach Brian Shimer says.

The Night Train's driver also is getting a lot of attention.
Two years ago, Holcomb, 29, was on the verge of retirement from the sport because of rapidly degenerating eyesight. Now, thanks to experimental surgery and an experimental sled, Olympic gold is clearly within his grasp.

Implantable contact lenses are permanent miniature lenses implanted directly into the eye to enhance its natural focussing ability, rather than change the shape of the cornea (as with laser eye surgery). This provides excellent quality of vision for a wide range of prescriptions.
